We willfully dedicate this precious achievement...

We willfully dedicate this precious achievement to our:
PARENTS, who have always cherished, sacrificed and gave comforts
in order for us to earn a degree and to be assured of a bright future;
TEA CHERS AND ADMINISTRA TORS, who have helped in the
transfer of ideas by ways of sharing and the creating of physical and mental
exercises, en route to the road of success;
CLASSMATES AND FRIENDS, who shared in our laughters and
tears as we walked on the thorny path of studentry;
SPONSORS AND PATRONS, who were clothed with golden hearts
and willingly rendered financial assistance;
ALMA MATER, who let us view the road to success and enabled
us to attain our educational aim; and
LORD ALMIGHTY, who offered grace to everyone and altogether
guided us in the fulfillment of this piece of endeavor and for giving lzght
during the dark moments in our lives and making all things possible.

College life is filled with activities that make it exciting and memorable, These
are ensconced in this Yearbook for posterity.
I feel myself very lucky, therefore, because of this opportunity given me to
scribble some thoughts for inclusion in this repository of what is dearest to the graduates.
For this is your souvenir, your story, your book.
Hopefully, with the passage of time, we shall find solace in these pages as well
as reminders 01 idealism, aspirations and dreams for which we struggled for and lived by.
Truly, every now and then, we have to look back for inspiration, encouragement and
fulfillment.

I commend the graduating class for coming out with this Yearbook. Again, qood
luck and congratulations to all!

Message
In our present-day concern for nation-building which encourages the maintenance
of the cultural identities of the Filipino people, the people of the Cordilleras are good
example of what a people can do to respond to the realities and challenges of modern
day life.

However, since we are all Filipinos, belonging to only one race - the filipino race
national goals could only be attained when our cultural minorities have realized that
through their potentials, needs and aspirations can only be achieved through the frame
work of national community, rather than the framework of an ethnic group.
Although, we in this country and the world at large worry about the deleterious
effects of population explosion, with a sense of appropriateness} I wish you all Godspeed
as you step out of the portals of this University and express the hope that you will go
and multiply!

CONGRA TULA nONS.'
On the sunny morning of Apnl 19, /986 you marched smiling up the stage to
receive your diploma, radiatinq with huppinl's!> and satisfaction,. afterwards you were
felicitated by your parents, relative!> and /iiends. It was your graduation!
Life has many anticipated moments and one of them is your graduation. Graduating
from your respective cour es has a two fold meaning: first it is an evidence of compliance
with academic reqUirements, and second it is the recognition of your fitness to take your
place in the community of cultured men and women.
As you emerge from the portals of Benguet State University for your professional
debut, I wish that you would show not only the stock of knowledge and sl?ills accumulated
while in school but also the kind of "educated man" that you are. Your diploma therefore,
is both a hope and a challenge to serve effectively and intelligently.
Your Alma Mater is confident that you will live up to her expectations and gratify
her hope to meet the challenge.
Good luck in your new endeavor.

GRADUATE STUDIES

Benguet State University
GRADUATE SCHOOL
La Trinidad, Benguet 0211
Message
Greetings to the 7986 Graduates!
In your journey through life, you will have to make many deci ions. It is my fervent
wish that with your newly-earned degree) you will make more right decisions than wrong ones.
You have shown that fini hing a college degree is not enough .. hence, you went on to
pursue a Master's degree. This is one of the right decisions you have made and a very import
ant one. You will be stepping into the world with a steady foot confident of your readiness

and willingness to face life's greater challenges. You have the courage because you are armed
with the proper training; you are sure of yourselves because those who taught and trained
you trust in your ability i you possess integrity, morality and a sterling character because
you are loyal to your Alma Mater and to those who love you.

From now on, every step you take will be on your own. You are the masters of
yourselves. I am hopeful that with your graduate education, you will succeed.

Thank you, Lord, for all the things
That make our lives so bright . ..
For blue skies in the morning
And evening's golden light,
For the majesty of mountains
And the beauty of the seas,
For animals and soaring birds
And shining green-leaved trees,
For flowers of a thousand hues
And gardens where they grow,
For homes where happy hours pass
And the love those hours know . ..
And thank You, Lord, for all the things
We might forget to name,
For You who our hearts, will know
We're grateful just the same . ..
We ask for just one blessing more
As bright as moon or star . ..
Give us the wisdom, Lord, to know
How fortunate we are!

Right at the ground floor of the Engineering building, at the left side is a cozy,
attractive little room, so inviting to peep through, filled with full-bloomed african violets of
different shades captioned "for your eyes only". Echoing inside is loud music of country
and folk songs coupled by the "tak, tiks" of the old model, rusting typewriter and the
laughter of a group - the yearbook staff.
Broadly situated at the center table is NICK BAUCAS, who by some grave mistake
was chosen Editor-in-Chief. Infront ol him is the topsy turvy long table, placed over it are
scattered pictures, bond papers, crumpled scraps, boxes of different sizes and a empty
bottle of coke. This is where the staff used to labor led by Associate Editor JHYMS WONG
who has a contagious disease identified only as laughter. There is BEL ANSELMO, who
continually smiles and makes almost every person envious of her undefined intellect and
DON-DON ANDISO who thinks he has been driven ,hopelessly insane by his two brainless
Managing Editors.
Roaming endlessly is the Staff Member CRISTY EDIONG, who seems to be silent
but is naughtier than anybody else from the group. And if some mistakes are committed,
ask the blushing VANGIE AllMAN how to go on with effectively. If you dare to look
far enough, there is TESS AMOY being bothered by the antique, although partially func
tional, typewriter. Right beside is FELY SALTIN, a helping hand, described as the lady
with the curves in the right places. Nowhere can you find at work TI NA CAT AGAN se
conded by TERRY BADONGEN - both on and off staffers.
Other helpers who are the supposed coordinators and who eventually joil1ed the
staffers, list are: JOHN BAY ANGAN, who seems tongue tied but manages to make every
corny joke funny. Looking for a "jack of all trades", the choice is ART ESPADA who
flashes sharp stares. Then there is JUDE CALAPEN and DORIS BANGLAG whose pass
words are unspoken - they love to flash ~rfect close-up smi les.
Feeling hungry? There is our energetic adviser DR. LUCY VI LLAMATER who
provides a break for laughter -
a bottle of jokes and a tease sandwich. If you are out of
some words, PROF. BONNIE MINONG got a lot to tell and share and if you want to reach
further, there is DR. EMMA KEITH who keeps the formula for success.
The aforementioned are your staffers working tirelessly to produce a well accepted
annual for you to remember. Hopeful of their perspiration, view them at work.

BSD HISTORICAL DEVnOPMENT
With the aim of educating the populace, including the highland people, an educational insti
tution was erected at this marshy valley of La Trinidad, capital town of Benguet, the erstwhile "salad
bowl" of the Philippines which is a scant six kilometers north of Baguio City, the renowned country's
"summer capital". It was founded in 1916 "baptized" Trinidad Farm School with MR. Donato
Carino as the first acting Principal of 30 elementary grade V pupils.
Several school heads administered the institution which includes the following and the respec
tive school year they served: James Wright, served as the first Principal, 1916; J.R. Zolanger, 1925;
Clayton Abbot, 1928; Glen Grisham, 1929, Russel Taylor, 1930; Clayton Douglas and Luis Dangilan,
1942-45.
After the succession of different administrators, the school was converted to La Trinidad
Agricultural High School in 1946 with Mr. Constancio Medrana as the Principal. Later, in 1952, it
became La Trinidad National Agricultural School. Subsequently, it was renamed Mountain ~atio
nal Agricultural School with separate school divisions.lt.s first Superintendent was Constancio Med
rana.
From 1955 to 1961, under the administration of Mr. Julian Mamaril, a four year degree pro
gram wa5 offered; namely Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education (BSAE) and Bachelor 'of
Science in Agricultural Homemaking (BSAH). In 1961, Mr. Amado Tolentino also served for a short
time and was succeeded by Dr. Bruno M. Santos who acted as President from 1961 to 1965. After
Dr. Santos, Pedro Ventura came and took his place and it was during his time when MNAS was con
verted to Mountain Agricultural College (MAC).
Sponsored and introduced by the then Congressman Andres A. Cosalan of Baguio-Benguet Con
gressional District, the passage of Republic Act No. 5923 converted the institution into the Mountain
State Agricultural College (MSAC). Pursuant to the provisions of the said act, the Board of Trustees
was constituted and it was also on November 17, 1970 that Dr. Bruno M.' Santos was appointed the
first State College President until his retirement on September 15, 1982. HI s place was then taken
over by Atty. Antonio G. Dumlao as the OIC until May 16, 1983. He was succeeded by Mr. Lawana
T. Batcagan as appointed OIC. Since the office of the president was still vacant, President Ferdinand
E. Marcos appointed Dr. Fortunato A. Battad as College President in November, 1983.
On January 12, 1986, the long dream <Ild aspiration of the cultural minorities of the Cordillera
region of having their own state uni~rsity, was realized through the conversion of MSAC into Benguet
State Uni~rsity (BSU) by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 2010 signed by President Ferdinand E.
Marcos.

Dr. Fortunato A. Battad
administeres his oath of office by Assemblyman Samuel M. Dangwa, as the first President
of Benguet State University.
Rev. Father Patricio Guyguyon celebrates the thanksgiving mass as some local officials of the province and admin
istrators of the institution bow their heads in accord.
