ABSTRACT
The study was conducted to analyze the dramas of ‘Laughingly Yours, Bianong’
and ‘Pagsarmingan’.
The study was conducted from December 2011 to March 2012.
There were 30 daily drama episodes from each drama program of BomboRadyo- Baguio
that were reviewed.
Among the 30 letter senders, majority belonged to the age bracket 20-29 years
old. Majority of them were female and single. Moreover, most of them were from
Pangasinan.
The drama program should continue to air since these can help story senders
express themselves and/or may help the listeners in managing their problems. Also,
listenership study may be done to validate the need for its continuous airing and an
evaluation of the counseling portion of the drama may be done to determine whether the
advice given and values learned successfully helped listeners with their problems. The
drama production might also consider airing dramas under different developmental
topics.

INTRODUCTION
Rationale

Radio is a tool that reaches its audience cheaply and rapidly. It is also used as a
daily companion for people who are working in the farms, markets, constructions and
houses. Its main role in a society is to inform the intended listeners of the present events
or issues and to entertain through music, plug, promo, ads and drama. The Philippine
Information Agency (PIA) proved that radio is the most relied upon and most used (cited
by Ongkiko and Flor, 1998). Jacobus(1993), confirmedthat drama both entertains and
instructs.
One of the most popular programs listened to by audience is the radio drama.

Drama is a mimetic action with acting ability at higher standard than in film,
theatre, and television (Crook, 1999).

Radio drama is intended to communicate values and information to the audience.
Furthermore, listening to such radio dramas may awaken an emotional state in the
listeners.

‘Pagsarmingan’ (Looking Glass) and ‘Laughingly Yours, Bianong’ are two of the
daily radio dramas (except Sundays) of BomboRadyo- Baguio. ‘Pagsarmingan’ which
started in 1970s is a fiction- based drama hosted by Remy Balderas. It focuses on various
situations of life and aims to teach the listener a lesson. It is aired from 9:30 to 10:00 in
the morning. Meanwhile, ‘Laughingly Yours, Bianong’ started in 1989. It is a true-to-
life-drama heard from 3:00 to 3:30 in the afternoon. It is hosted by Fernando “Bianong”
Ubado which tells stories from a funny point of view and it is based on the stories of
letter senders (absolute astronomy.com, 2011).

According to Luczon coordinator of drama productions of BomboRadyo- Baguio,
daily radio dramas are on the top of the ratings since it starts and ends on the same day
which implies that it satisfies the wants of the listeners for a day. He also added that the
dramas contribute much in the overall rating of the listenership.

These dramas can be helpful and interesting not only to the letter senders but also
to the listeners since the hosts share pieces of advice after every drama which they can
relate to.

The content and delivery of the programs contribute to its popularity. Therefore,
there is an existing interest to analyze the content of these programs.

Statement of the Problem

The study aimed to analyze the content of ‘Pagsarmingan’ and ‘Laughingly
Yours, Bianong’.

It specifically answered the following questions:
1. What are the program profiles of ‘Pagsarmingan’ and ‘Laughingly Yours,
Bianong’?
2. How are the stories sent to the station?
3. What is the socio-demographic profile of the letter- senders of Laughingly
Yours, Bianong?
4. What are the topics of the dramas?
5. What are the values communicated by the dramas?

Objectives of the Study

The study aimed to analyze the content of ‘Pagsarmingan’ and ‘Laughingly
Yours, Bianong’.

It specifically aimed to:
1. Determine the program profiles of ‘Pagsarmingan’ and ‘Laughingly Yours,
Bianong’.
2. Determine how the stories are sent to the station.
3. Determine the socio-demographic profile of the letter- senders of Laughingly
Yours, Bianong.
4. Enumerate the themes of the stories being aired.
5. Determine the values communicated by the dramas.

Importance of the Study

The result of the study may help the drama producers, program planners and radio
program implementers for the improvement of their program. It may also be useful for
the values educators because it provides an additional knowledge and techniques on
teaching good attitude.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focused on the profile of ‘Pagsarmingan’ and ‘Laughingly Yours,
Bianong’, how are the stories sent to the station, topics of the stories being aired, the
values communicated and the socio-demographic profile of the letter senders of
Laughingly Yours, Bianong. It did not include the effects of the dramas to the listeners’
behavior.

REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Drama

Drama is the art of representing for the pleasure of other events that happened or
we imagine happening (Jacobus, 1993). He added that drama both entertains and instructs

Meanwhile, it is also written to be performed by actors infront of an audience, a
story told mainly through the speech and actions of characters. Accordingly,it also
includes many of the same elements as other narratives, it also has its own unique
elements (Chin et al., 2000). This includes the plot, character, dialogue, staging,
symbolism, and irony, and lastly, the theme (Di Yanni, 2002).

Radio Drama

Radio drama is one of the unique forms of entertainment. It influences the
listener’s attention, emotion and widens one’s imagination (Crook, 1999).

Radio drama became popular all over the world before the widespread access to
television programming. It depends on dialogue, music and sound effects to help the
listener imagine the story in her or his "mind's eye"--in this sense, it resembles reading in
some ways more than audio/visual drama. In the television era, some audio drama has
been produced and marketed that owes much to radio drama, without ever being
broadcast on radio (wordiq.com, 2010).

Moreover, drama is a composition that tells a story through action and dialogue. It
generally involves a conflict: person versus person or person versus society. A drama, its
broadest form has a plot; usually, the plot has a beginning, middle, and end. It includes
dramatic techniques, such as suspense and exposition (Hausmanet al., 2000).

RonalieKarztin C. Martin. 2012

5

As said by Luczon (2012), radio drama has a great role in broadcasting. It
convinces its audience through touching their emotions until it will let them realize the
right or wrong and dos and don’ts.

Values Communicated by the Drama

In a drama, there is always a value reflected in it because it is meant for it to give
a moral lesson. It came out on the study of Pudsoc (2005) that his respondents in
Balbalayang San Gabriel, La Union gained 90% generosity and 87% for respectfulness
from the drama program entitled Sarsaritani Lola Angela.

Furthermore, Palubos (2004) added that the leading values that the respondents
learned from radio dramas were love of God (74%), love for family (65%), and solidarity
which include fellowship, cooperation, unity and workmanship.

According to Chakas (2007),values are classified as follows:
True
Love-
a real feeling despite of differences
Forgiveness-readiness to pardon
Courage-fearlessness or bravery
Cooperation-helping, participating or being concern
Endurance-being strong and not giving up easily
Respectfulness-giving considerations
Sacrifice-prioritizing the must
Loyalty-faithfulness
Industry-hard-working

Enthusiasm-warm hearted

Trust in God-obeying God and his words
Hope-being optimistic
Resourcefulness-alertness
Temperance-moderation or self-restraint in action

Topics of the Drama
According to Diamond (1996), the term has varying uses and it is universally
recognized in the pre-theoretical sense as synonymous with “theme” or what is being
talked about. Additionally, topic is defined as a subject of conversation or discussion
(dictionary.reference.com, 2012).
Moreover, it is the main organizing principle of a discussion, either verbal or
written. Topics offer us an occasion for speaking or writing and a focus which governs
what we say. They are the subject matter of our conversations, and the avenues by which
we arrive at other subjects of conversations. Consider, for instance, a recent class
discussion. Although your instructor determined what topic you discussed initially, some
students probably asked questions that led to other topics. As the subjects of our
discussions lead to related subjects, so do the topics we write about lead to related topics
in our academic studies. However, unlike the verbal conversations we have, each
individual piece of writing we produce usually focuses on a single topic. Most effective
writers learn that when they present a well-defined, focused, and developed topic, they do
a better job of holding their readers' attention and presenting appropriate information than
if they had not attempted to place boundaries on the subject of their writing
(writing.colostate.edu, 1993).
Content analysis of ‘Laughingly Yours, Bianong’ and ‘Pagsarmingan’/

7

The following classifications of topic are based from Chakas (2007):
Love life-an intense feeling of a deep affection for a person
Family problem-misunderstandings between the family members
Adultery/ Concubinage-an affair between a married person and a person
Sexual harassment-abusing a person in private body parts
Friendship-a mutual attachment
Health- the physical condition of one’s body
Murder-the offense of unlawfully killing a human being with definite purpose
formed beforehand
Poverty- hardship of life in terms of basic needs

Operational Definition of Terms

Story- sender- refers to listeners who send their stories.

Story- based on true to life experiences
-sent by story senders

METHODOLOGY
Locale and Time of the Study

The study was conductedat BomboRadyo- Baguio and in La Trinidad, where the
researcher listened to the two dramas, ‘Pagsarmingan’ and ‘Laughingly Yours, Bianong’.
Also, interviews were done at BomboRadyo- Baguio station.

La Trinidad (Figure 1) is made accessible to the thirteen municipalities of the
province by five highway systems such as: Mountain trail on the northeast, Mankayan
road on the north, Kennon road on the south, Kayapa road on the southeast and
Naguillanroad or Quirino Highway on the west. The town is bounded on the east by the
municipality of Itogon and the north by the municipality of Tublay and on the west by the
municipalities of Sablan and Tuba, and on the South by Baguio City. The town has an
area of 7,877.416 hectares and it is composed of 16 barangays.

DZWX- BomboRadyo Baguio (Figure 2) is situated at # 32 Lourdes Subdivision,
Dominican Hill and the transmitter is built at Tam-awanPinsao, Baguio City. A ten
minute ride and twenty minutes walk from the Central Public Market of Baguio City.

The study was conducted from December 2011 to March 2012.

Subjects of the Study
Thirty (30) succeeding episodes from each radio drama, with a total of sixty (60),
served as the samples that were used in the study. Particularly, episodes of December
2011 and three episodes from January 2012.

Respondents of the Study
The key informants of the study were the hosts of the two programs ‘Pagsarmingan’ and
‘Laughingly Yours, Bianong’ who were Remy Balderas and Fernando Ubado,
respectively.William Luczon, coordinator of Drama Productions and Ferdinand Feria,
president of the Saleng Productions were included as key informants.

Data Collection

Key informant interviews of the hosts were used for the necessary information in
gathering data while the rest of the data on the drama contents such as the topics, values
and the profile of the story senders of ‘Laughingly Yours, Bianong’ and
‘Pagsarmingan’including their age, sex and civil status were collected by the researcher
through listening to the dramas for thirty consecutive days using USB player while some
were read through the scripts and some were heard from the radio. For the follow up
questions, cell phone calls and text messaging were used.
Additionally, a coding sheet was used in gathering the topics and values of the
dramas for a better result. Values according to Chakas’ (2007) classification include true
love, forgiveness, courage cooperation, endurance, respectfulness, sacrifice, loyalty,
industry, enthusiasm, trust in God, hope, resourcefulness, meekness and temperance. The
values were classified using content analysis according to what the senders learned from
their experiences. Some were based on what lessons the host imparts at the end of the
drama. Topics were classified according to love life, family problem,
adultery/concubinage, sexual harassment, friendship and health.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Profile of the Radio Dramas
‘Laughingly Yours, Bianong’
It is adaily ending comedy drama(except Sundays). It is heard from 3:30 to 4:00
in the afternoon and is hosted by Ferdinand “Bianong” Ubado.
The drama was first heard on air in 1989 andthe title was proposed by the late
manager of BomboRadyo-Baguio,CrisostomoIllustre. The name ‘MangBianong’ came
from Ubado’s radio name who served as the first host of the drama. Illustre
advisedUbado to start a daily ending comedy drama where the listeners would be
involved by sending and sharing their funny experiences through letters. After airing for
some time, the station learned that this drama was known and loved by the listeners until
it was replayed in other Northern Luzon stations of Bomboin Dagupan, La Union, Vigan,
Laoag, Tuguegaraoand Isabela. Additionally, Ubado was not only the host but also the
director and scriptwriter of the said drama.
The letters that were sent to the Bombo station and to Ubado were his basis in
making the scripts that will be dramatized. He submitsthe scriptsto the Saleng
Productions Company for recording while the letters will be filed so that no other people
will read it.Ubado is the one choosing the stories that are to be aired.
The talents of Saleng Productions Company who produce the drama are Peri
Claro, Eddie Bona, Robin Crisostomo, Emily Kalika, JovieDupais and Gina Almoyte.

The first dramas that were aired came from the story senders of DZWX-Baguio
City. Afterward, there were other stories from senders coming from different regions of
Luzon.

Ubado was entrusted by the story senders for their secrets in life and their
experiences. He was never replaced as the host since 1989 until the end of the episode.
The last episode of the program was recorded on December 23, 2011 ending the 22 years
of airing.
Aims of the drama.‘Laughingly yours, Bianong’ is made to share amusement or to
entertain the listeners. This program was created for the listeners to share their memorable
funny experiences in their lives. Moreover, this program can be a venue for story senders
to reword their funny stories so that other listeners can learn from them. Further, because
some people are ashamed to share their experiences to others in face to face
conversations,‘Laughingly Yours, Bianong’ became a venue for these people to share
their stories because the listeners assure that their identities and secrets are protected.
Luczonadded that while listeners are being entertained, they will also gain moral
values because the stories tell about the different aspects of life. In this way, they will be
given suggestions on what to do with their own troubles. This can also serve as a lesson
and as a model for them.
After the airing of each episode of ‘Laughingly Yours, Bianong’, it is followed by
Ubado’s advice to the story senders and to the listeners so that they could also relate to
the aired drama. The pieces of advice that Ubado shared may help them manage their
problems.
How story senders send their stories. Originally, story senders dominantly used
regular mails to send their letters to the program, but with the advent of communication
technologies, some story senders would rather send their stories through text
messaging.Others also share their stories personally to the host. Feria estimated that in a
Content analysis of ‘Laughingly Yours, Bianong’ and ‘Pagsarmingan’/

15

month, 80% used regular mail, 16.66% used cell phones and 3.33% orally shared their
stories. This shows that majority of the story senders prefer writing their stories with
complete information.
Story senders have different ways of writing their stories. Some purely narrate it
while others prefer following the way the drama is aired where there are dialogues.
There are different types of stories being received by Ubado. Some are seeking
for advice such as in family problems, relationship problems and some are already
resolved.
However, e-mail was not used to send their stories because the host did not use e-
mail address for receiving these letters.
Story senders began sending their stories through regular mail since it first started
airing. According to Ubado, it is the best way of sending stories because it contains exact
information and is easier to make a script for it.
Mail is sent to the DZWX-BomboRadyo, # 87 Lourdes Subdivision, Baguio City
while some of the story senders are handed to Ubado personally especially for lowlanders
who are from the same province as him.
Through the influence of technology, senders send their stories through text
massaging to the personal number of Ubado while some are sent to the BomboRadyo-
Baguio’s official cellphone numbers. The stories that were sent will be processed.Ubado
will polish the story. He adds details and humor to make it a comedy drama and then he
will write a script. He will delete the text message when it is done to avoid confusion if
which story is done.
Content analysis of ‘Laughingly Yours, Bianong’ and ‘Pagsarmingan’/
RonalieKarztin C. Martin. 2012

16

Few story senders preferred sharing their stories orally to Ubado at the station of
BomboRadyo- Baguio or at his house for those who know him. The drama productions
will let the person write his story in case Ubado is not at the station.
In choosing which story to air, Ubado does not follow the first come- first serve
basis, instead, he prioritized the letters that badly needs an advice followed by the letters
that were already resolved. Also, Ubado encourage listeners to share their funny
experiences after the end of his program and any drama from BomboRadyo- Baguio.
Furthermore, Ubado calls or texts a story sender if he has a question regarding the
story sent or for additional information and he does not need to reply to the story senders
unless the story is incomplete. Ubado’s advice, reaction and gratitude to the story senders
are expressed just after the drama.
Stories that have lessons and humor even if it criticizes military and government
were chosen as long as the people are informed of the situations and help them realize
their mistakes. He added that there are really specific stories to be aired based on
occasions such as Christmas, New Year, Valentine’s Day and All Souls Day.
Stories that are too sensitive which could lead to conflicts were disregarded
including the letters that are not legible.
Ubado works only on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. He records seven scripts
in a day for advancement. He types the scripts through typewriter and gives the scripts to
the Saleng Productions Company for recording while he files the letters for safety
because he does not want others to read it. The scripts that are already recorded are filed
and then the Saleng Productions Company will dispose after six months. Also, the
dramas that are saved in the computer for six months will be deleted.

General Profile of the Story Senders. Table 1 shows the general profile of the
story senders based on the scripts and the dramas aired. The information is based from
the drama aired and also in the scripts. Among the 30 letter senders, 60% belonged to the
age bracket 20-29 years old while 10% belonged to 40-49 years old. Majority (66.66%)
of them were female and single (56.66%).
Out of this information, there is a possibility that the listeners of the program are
those with the same profile as the letter senders.

Profile of ‘Pagsarmingan’
‘Pagsarmingan’ (Looking Glass) is a fiction based serious drama hosted by Remy
Balderas. It is heard through radio from Monday to Saturday at 9:30 to 10:00 in the
morning and ends daily.
‘Pagsarmingan’ started airing in the 1970’s. During this, the management was
deciding to create a daily fiction based drama. The drama productions came up with the
title ‘Pagsarmingan’and Remy Balderas was chosen to be the host of the drama.Balderas
first worked as announcer of BomboRadyo- Baguio but gave it up when she was asked to
host ‘Pagsarmingan’.
The drama focused on various aspects of people’s life but mostly are about family
relationships where in the listeners can still relate from the stories. ‘Pagsarmingan’ is
either a resolved or an open ended story where the listeners are given the chance to
predict its ending.
Balderas decides on the topic for the drama and writes the scripts for it. After
finishing the scripts, she gives it to Saleng Productions for recording. The talents of the
productions are Peri Claro, Eddie Bona, Robin Crisostomo, Emily Kalika, JovieDupais
and Gina Almoyte and directed by Ferdinand Feria.
Aims of the drama. As said by Luczon, daily dramas contribute significantly to the
rating of BomboRadyo- Baguio. In this case, people show that they are entertained aside
from the lessons they gain. However, listeners can hear dramas while they are doing their
field work or household chores.

‘Pagsarmingan’ is a fiction based story but it still leaves life lessons for the listeners to
consider. Further, the drama gives an idea on how the listeners overcome their problems.
Also, they are given a hint on the effects of their decisions.
